Consistency Models: image generation in ONE step instead of fifty.

Diffusion models make gorgeous images, but they are slow: they start from noise and denoise over many steps, each one a full pass through the network. That is dozens of passes for a single image.

Consistency Models, introduced by OpenAI in 2023, attack that head-on. A diffusion process traces a smooth trajectory from a clean image out to pure noise. The key idea is self-consistency: train a model so that ANY point along that trajectory maps directly back to the SAME starting image. Once it has learned that, you can jump from noise to a finished image in a single step - or take a few steps to trade a little speed for extra quality.

They can be distilled from an existing diffusion model or trained from scratch. The best-known application is Latent Consistency Models (LCM), which turn slow image generators into near-instant ones, powering real-time and on-device image tools.

Why it matters: consistency models keep most of diffusion's quality while cutting sampling from many steps to one or two - the difference between waiting and watching an image appear as you type.
