DeepCache: how to make diffusion image models 2-4x faster for free - no retraining, no new checkpoint.

Diffusion models make beautiful images, but they are slow. To turn noise into a picture they run a full neural network 25 to 50+ times, once per denoising step. Most of that cost is the same heavy network fired again and again.

DeepCache (CVPR 2024) exploits a simple observation: between adjacent steps, the deep, high-level features barely change. The big picture is decided early; only fine detail keeps moving. So instead of recomputing those slow-changing features every step, DeepCache computes them once, caches them, and reuses them for several steps - recomputing only the cheap, shallow layers.

The enabler is the U-Net shape. A U-Net funnels the image down to a small dense core, then expands it back up, with skip connections bridging the two sides. DeepCache caches the deep core at one skip branch and stitches it back in on the cheap steps.

Why it matters:
- 2.3x faster on Stable Diffusion v1.5 for a 0.05 CLIP-score drop
- 4.1x on LDM-4 (ImageNet) for a 0.22 FID rise
- Completely training-free - it plugs into your existing model and standard samplers like DDIM and PLMS
- Two dials: cache interval and branch depth trade speed for quality

Reach for it on any U-Net diffusion model (SD 1.5/2.1, SDXL, img2img, inpainting) when you want free speed. Think twice when you need pixel-perfect fidelity or run a pure transformer diffusion (DiT) with no U-Net skip.
