Tiny Robotic Arms Could Change the Future of Back Surgery
Scientists have developed an innovative robotic system that could make certain types of back surgery more precise and less invasive. The technology is designed to help treat lumbar degenerative diseases, a common cause of lower back pain that occurs when tissues in the spine press on nearby nerves.
The new system uses three ultra-thin robotic arms, each only 2 millimeters wide. Despite their small size, the arms are highly flexible and can move through the narrow spaces inside the spine that are difficult to reach with conventional surgical tools.
Each robotic arm has a specific role. One carries a tiny camera to provide a clear view of the surgical area, another uses a laser to remove tissue and control bleeding, and the third helps grasp and manipulate tissue. Working together, these instruments allow surgeons to perform delicate procedures with improved visibility and control.
Researchers tested the technology using a 3D-printed spine model, animal studies, and human cadaver specimens. The results showed that the robotic system could successfully access hard-to-reach areas and perform minimally invasive nerve decompression procedures.
While further research and clinical studies are needed, this breakthrough highlights how advanced robotics may help improve future surgical treatments and patient recovery.
