This Tiny 185-Milligram Robot Can Keep Flying After Being Flattened

Researchers have developed an all-polymer micro aerial flying robot weighing just 185 milligrams.

Inspired by flying insects, the robot uses an electrostrictive bending actuator that directly drives its cone-shaped compliant wings without a traditional transmission. This simple, flexible structure helps the robot withstand impacts and compression while still producing enough lift for flight.

The actuator reaches a power density of 1,600 watts per kilogram and a bending angle of 136° at 110 hertz. The robot can take off without external assistance and reaches an average ascending speed of about 40 centimeters per second.

In demonstrations, the robot was able to resume flight after being hit by a flyswatter or compressed by heavy loads. The researchers say its lightweight, transmission-free design could be useful for future micro aerial vehicles operating in confined or challenging environments.

This video explains the published research in simplified language for educational and informational purposes. It does not claim that the robot is indestructible or ready for commercial use.
