Origami-Inspired Tiny Robot Could Revolutionize Precision Eye Surgery

A new origami-inspired robotic manipulator called Origanoid could transform the future of microsurgery by allowing doctors to perform extremely delicate procedures with greater accuracy and control. Developed by Suzuki and a research team, this tiny robot is designed to overcome the limitations of traditional surgical manipulators that are often large, heavy, and difficult to use in space-limited operating rooms.

Procedures like subretinal injections, which involve delivering treatments beneath the retina, require movements far beyond the natural precision of the human hand. Existing robotic systems help improve accuracy but often rely on complex metal structures that can be bulky and increase the risk of accidental contact with surrounding tissues.

Inspired by the folding principles of origami, the Origanoid uses simple plastic materials to achieve a compact and lightweight design. Measuring only 160 × 50 × 50 mm and weighing just 17.9 grams, it can perform highly precise movements with an accuracy of 12 micrometers while generating forces up to 550 mN — enough for delicate retinal procedures.

The robot also meets important medical requirements, including sterilization capability and an emergency tool release system that works within 50 milliseconds. Successful tests in living subjects demonstrated its ability to perform subretinal injections.

This breakthrough shows how origami-inspired robotics could bring smaller, safer, and more precise tools to future medical treatments, especially advanced cell and gene therapies.
