Wooden boards travel along a conveyor system and pass directly through an intense flame inside a custom-built furnace. Created by Einar Mikkelsen, the machine mechanizes the traditional Japanese wood-charring technique known as yakisugi, commonly called Shou Sugi Ban.

As the wood moves through the heated chamber, intense temperatures thermally decompose the outermost layer, forming a carbonized surface. Controlling the exposure time and heat intensity helps determine the depth and consistency of the char, while the conveyor allows successive boards to undergo the same treatment.

Traditionally used in Japanese architecture, yakisugi can improve the weathering characteristics and biological resistance of suitable wood when properly processed and maintained. Mechanizing the technique allows more consistent surface treatment while preserving a centuries-old approach to wood finishing that does not inherently require chemical preservatives.
