Scientists Create Metamaterials That Can Learn to Change Shape

Living organisms can change their shape and behavior to adapt to their surroundings. Now, scientists have developed human-made materials that can do something surprisingly similar: learn how to change shape.

A team led by Yao Du created special structures called metamaterials that can learn complex shape-changing responses from examples. Unlike traditional materials, which are designed to perform a fixed function, these metamaterials can gradually modify their internal properties to learn new behaviors.

The key to this learning is local stiffness. Different parts of the material can become stiffer or more flexible, changing how the entire structure responds to forces. Using a method called contrastive learning, researchers can train the material to reproduce specific target shapes.

Even more interestingly, the metamaterials can forget previously learned behaviors and learn new ones. They can also learn multiple shape changes, including movements that break normal reciprocity, as well as multistable transformations.

These abilities allowed the researchers to demonstrate useful actions such as reflex gripping and locomotion.

The work introduces a new concept called physical learning, where intelligence is partly stored directly in the material. This could eventually lead to more adaptive soft robots and smart materials that can learn and respond to changing environments.
