Osaka University researchers (Takagi & Nishimoto, CVPR 2023) decode a layout clue and a meaning clue from fMRI scans and let Stable Diffusion paint the picture. A separate team (BrainBits, NeurIPS 2024) tested this and other methods and found most of the performance survives a bottleneck of 30 to 50 numbers. The Osaka authors' own FAQ says it is not mind-reading.
