In 2022, OpenAI's DALL-E 2 still had a waitlist — then Stability AI released Stable Diffusion and let anyone download it. This is the story of the open moment in AI image generation.

On August 22, 2022, Stability AI publicly released Stable Diffusion (built with CompVis at LMU Munich and Runway), including the model weights, under the CreativeML OpenRAIL-M license. It could run on a single consumer graphics card (about 6.9 GB of VRAM at launch). Founder Emad Mostaque said training used 256 Nvidia A100 GPUs for about 150,000 hours — roughly $600,000 at market price (his estimate). By October 2022, more than 200,000 developers had downloaded and licensed it, and Stability AI raised $101 million at a reported valuation of about $1 billion.
