Zero terminal SNR is why the original Stable Diffusion could not make a pure black image. A ByteDance team found about seven percent of the original signal still left at the last noising step, so every generation settled on murky medium grey. The fix leaves no signal at that step and retrains the model to predict a blend of image and noise. What other model limit might hide in its training recipe?
