Watch 6,000 Random Dots Turn Into a Cat #shorts

Six thousand completely random dots. A tiny AI nudges every one of them a little, two hundred times in a row, each time asking one question: which way looks less like noise? The result is a cat. 98% of the dots land right on the lines, and none of them existed before.

We trained this model ourselves on a single cat drawn with 40,000 dots (206,850 numbers, 60,000 training steps). Watch it learn: after 1 step it makes dust, after 300 a blob, after 1,500 a head, after 60,000 whiskers. This is exactly how AI image generators work (a diffusion model), just with millions of pixels instead of dots.

AI, Under the Hood #8. Full story: Diffusion Models, Explained in 10 Minutes (pin the link).

Model: our own denoising diffusion model (DDPM, Ho, Jain, Abbeel 2020), trained from scratch.
