This Breakthrough Could Redefine How Future Rescue Robots Explore Dangerous Places.

Inspired by the way real vines naturally grow toward sunlight, researchers at the University of California San Diego have created a soft robotic vine that automatically crawls toward light and heat—without relying on a complex central controller.
The robot is powered by a Photothermal Phase-change Series Actuator (PPSA). Each actuator contains a light-absorbing material and a low-boiling-point fluid sealed inside flexible pouches. When exposed to light or heat, the fluid vaporizes, causing one side of the robot to contract while the tip extends forward. This simple physical process continuously steers the robot toward the strongest light source.
Unlike many robots that depend on cameras, AI, or complex programming, this design uses its materials to sense and respond to the environment. It can even navigate around obstacles and continue working if part of the robot is damaged.
Although the current prototype responds slowly and is not yet suitable for extreme fire conditions, future versions could assist firefighters, inspect hazardous environments, search disaster zones, and autonomously track light or heat sources.
