Engineers Built A Robot That Refuses To Treat Walls As Obstacles

Most ground robots have one major limitation: when the floor ends, their journey usually ends too. Disney Research Zurich and ETH Zurich developed VertiGo to challenge that assumption.
VertiGo can drive across the ground, approach a vertical wall, and transition into wall climbing. Instead of relying on magnets, suction cups, or adhesive materials, the robot uses two independently tiltable propellers.
These propellers generate thrust that presses the robot toward the surface while also helping control its orientation. As VertiGo approaches a wall, the propulsion system changes its direction, allowing the robot to move from horizontal terrain onto a vertical surface.
The important breakthrough is the combination of ground mobility and wall climbing in one robotic platform. That could be valuable for inspecting structures, industrial facilities, difficult-to-access surfaces, and potentially search-and-rescue environments.
Rather than building a robot specifically for walls, VertiGo demonstrates a different idea: making the environment itself part of the robot's route.
