Kurt Vonnegut's 1952 novel Player Piano imagined a future where automation performed most work while ordinary people struggled with a surprising problem: they no longer felt needed. In this video, I explore why Vonnegut's warning feels especially relevant during the rise of artificial intelligence. The real danger of AI may not simply be unemployment or machines replacing humans. It may be losing the sense of usefulness, contribution, and purpose that meaningful work can provide. We'll consider why efficiency isn't always progress, why humans need agency, and why our value must ultimately come from something deeper than productivity.
