Stepper or Servo Motors

Most of our linear actuators ship with open‑loop steppers, and it’s not just because they’re cheaper than servos. Steppers give you solid holding torque for static loads, are dead simple to set up, and you can swap motors and drives without hunting for the exact matched pair when something fails on a Friday afternoon.

Servos still have their place high speed, high load, tight feedback, collision detection but after years of real projects, we’ve found steppers are usually the right starting point for most applications. The point isn’t to “always use steppers” or “always use servos”; it’s to look at the whole system and pick the thing that actually fits your motion problem. That’s the work we do at Schaner Designs.
