AI Papers for Humans, Episode 9 - Stable Diffusion / Latent Diffusion Models (Rombach et al., CVPR 2022, arXiv:2112.10752).

Every AI in this series learned to UNDERSTAND the world. This one learned to DREAM UP a new one: type a few words and it conjures a brand-new picture that never existed, out of a screen full of pure static.

Kid metaphor: a TV tuned to a dead channel - snowy static - and you whisper a cat wearing a wizard hat, and the static slowly, step by step, clears up into exactly that picture, like fog burning off to reveal a painting.

The trick: take millions of real photos, sprinkle static on each until they are pure snow, and practice un-sprinkling it one pinch at a time. Do that billions of times and it can start from nothing but snow and remember its way to a picture nobody ever took.

The numbers:
- Trained on LAION - billions of image+caption pairs from the web
- The latent trick: compress to 64x64 instead of 512x512 - 48x fewer numbers to push around
- Released OPEN in August 2022 - anyone could run it on a consumer GPU
- Generated a 512x512 image in seconds on a gaming laptop
