Beneath Shanghai, engineers extending the city’s busy east-west transit spine Metro Line 13 used an AI Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to dig a tunnel just two meters beneath a busy highway. The first large-scale deployment of the "Digital-Intelligent Shield 2.0 System" marks the transition of Shanghai's most advanced tunnel-boring tech from the lab to the field.

The mega-drill tunnelled continuously for over 300 meters, installing structural rings and excavating, without a single human intervention.

Navigating Shanghai’s soft, muddy soil usually requires expert human operators. Now, the "Digital-Intelligent Shield 2.0" can automatically adjust to soil conditions in real time.

After decades of relying entirely on Western imports for tunnel-boring tech, years of domestic innovation have allowed China to lead global production for eight consecutive years and bring its new AI-powered drilling systems to transit projects in Singapore and Macau.
