Researchers Have Developed a revolutionary sensor that finally bridges the gap between sight and touch in modern robotics.
Developed by teams at the National University of Singapore and RoboScience, FingerEye combines two compact RGB cameras with a deformable soft ring structure. While traditional tactile sensors only trigger feedback after contact is made, FingerEye delivers a continuous stream of unified visual and tactile data. This allows robotic grippers to perceive object distance and depth pre-contact, then instantly measure wrench forces and torques upon touch.
By pairing this sensor with a novel imitation learning policy and digital twin simulations, robots can now master complex, high-precision tasks like chip picking, coin standing, letter retrieving, and syringe manipulation from limited real-world data. This breakthrough significantly enhances robot adaptability for manufacturing, healthcare, and household assistance.
