Open source AI models can vanish from Hugging Face without warning, and Washington is weighing a ban on Chinese open models. Here is how to keep the ones you actually run.
Nvidia is buying Hugging Face, three million open weight models sit on that one website, and the download button is the part a ban can switch off. I go through what already disappeared, which models are genuinely at risk, and the two hard drives that solve it for an evening of work.

WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS
• Why Hugging Face is a single point of failure for open source AI models
• What the Nvidia acquisition changes, and what Jensen Huang promised
• Why Software Heritage archived 12 TB of code and skipped 40 PB of model weights
• The three policy options reported for Chinese open models, and who lobbied against them
• Runway deleting its Hugging Face account and taking Stable Diffusion 1.5 with it
• The Meta DMCA that wiped 403 GitHub repositories in one day
• How to size a model: roughly 2 GB per billion parameters at 16-bit precision
• Why a quantized model alone is a lossy copy, and what the original files buy you
• The files a local LLM needs to still boot in five years: tokenizer, config, chat template, generation settings, license
• Checksums, pinned revisions, and keeping a llama.cpp build next to the weights
• Archival Blu-ray at $70 to $100 per TB versus used server drives at $15
• Pirate Face, a torrent index of 669,000 Apache and MIT licensed models
• Heretic storing a 9 KB recipe instead of a whole uncensored model
WHAT IS AN OPEN WEIGHT MODEL?
An open weight model is one whose trained parameters you can download and run yourself. Tools like Ollama, LM Studio and llama.cpp load those files from your own disk, so a local LLM keeps working with no account, no API key and no internet. Most of them come from Hugging Face, which hosts over three million public models. That convenience is also the risk: a repository can be deleted, relicensed or blocked, and every tool that pulls from it by default breaks the same day. Downloading the full repository and storing it yourself is the whole fix.
