Leila Turner-Scott says her son, Sam Nelson, began using ChatGPT for schoolwork and everyday questions before eventually asking it about substance use. According to the family’s lawsuit and her congressional testimony, ChatGPT later gave him unsafe guidance involving drugs, including advice concerning combinations of kratom and Xanax. Sam died from an accidental overdose in May 2025.

In her testimony, Turner-Scott called for stronger safeguards and warned parents about relying on AI chatbots for medical or drug-related advice. The case has raised broader questions about AI safety, user trust, personalization, and whether chatbots can be relied upon when children or young people turn to them for sensitive health questions.
