Sarah Harlow | Ford just admitted something most companies would never say out loud — its AI systems failed, and it took humans to clean up the mess. Over the past three years, Ford quietly rehired 350 veteran engineers, internally nicknamed gray beards, after its automated quality systems proved simply unable to match the depth of experience those workers brought to the table. Vice President Charles Poon acknowledged that Ford had not paid nearly enough attention to its most experienced staff before pushing them out in favor of automation. The decision to bring them back has paid off in a big way. Ford just topped the JD Power Initial Quality Study for the first time in 16 years, with human judgment credited for saving the company hundreds of millions of dollars in warranty costs. Perhaps most striking of all is who is doing the crediting — CEO Jim Farley, the same executive who once predicted that artificial intelligence would eventually replace half of America's white collar workforce. Sometimes, it turns out, the robots need a babysitter. So we want to know what you think — are companies moving too fast to replace experienced workers with AI before the technology is actually ready to handle the job?
