La etimología de la palabra fantasía proviene de la raíz griega Phantasos, hijo o servidor del sueño, y a su vez ésta, proviene del verbo griego Phaíno, aparecer, mostrar(se), manifestar(se), cuya raíz se remonta al indoeuropeo "bha- que expresa la idea de luz o brillo y significa "lo que aparece". De ella surgen diferentes voces en griego y en castellano como fósforo, fantasma, fotón, etc.

La imaginación se relaciona con la fantasía desde que Aristóteles introdujo el término otorgándole el significado de puente entre los sentidos y el intelecto. Como la capacidad de retener o reproducir
en la mente las imágenes de las cosas que ya no están presentes. Como un reservorio donde almacenar copias de la realidad. En su época ere la capacidad del alma para crearse una imagen mental.

Posteriormente el concepto cambió de sentido con el racionalismo y la ilustración y más tarde en el idealismo alemán con Kant que separó el concepto de imaginación del de fantasía.

It is the capacity to retain or reproduce in the mind images of things that are no longer present. Like a reservoir in which to store copies of reality. In his time, it was the soul’s capacity to create a mental image for itself.

Subsequently, the concept changed in meaning with rationalism and the Enlightenment, and later in German idealism with Kant, who separated the concept of imagination from that of fantasy.
