Speaking with The Economist’s Editor-in-Chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, Musk said today’s AI already rivals 90% of professional software engineers and predicts it will soon outperform 99%, reaching what he describes as “Stockfish-level” performance—a comparison to the chess engine that surpassed the world’s best human players.

But Musk’s prediction goes far beyond programming.

He believes AI will eventually exceed human performance across nearly every profession, fundamentally changing the role of work in society. In the long term, Musk envisions a future where work becomes optional, with people pursuing activities out of passion rather than necessity.
