Anthropic just dropped another model — Sonnet 5. Arena’s AI capability lead, Peter Gostev, put it through loads of real-world tests in agent mode on the Arena: 3D scene generations, React websites, interactive UIs, data visualizations, and more. It goes head-to-head against GPT 5.5 Extra High, Opus 4.8, Fable, and the open-source GLM to see where it actually lands — not just on the benchmarks, but on the stuff that matters when you're actually building.

The verdict? Sonnet 5 is a step up from 4.6, but it gets edged out by GPT 5.5, runs surprisingly close to a cheaper open-source model on front-end tasks, and has a curious habit of burning through tokens on validation loops — sometimes costing more than Fable.
