Cited Is Not Tested: 215,128 Fake Review Pages Got Into Perplexity's Answers

Perplexity recommended software and cited a page that was written for Perplexity, not for you.

Three sites published 215,128 "best software" pages shaped for retrieval: a title that matches the query, a date from this week, a top ten with scores, a writer, an editor, a fact-checker. The same score ladder sits on every page, with different winners. In Trellner Research's test (Perplexity only, 380 categories), about one in forty grounding sources came from those three sites.

An answer engine searches, reads, and writes. The search step picks pages that look like the answer. The writing step trusts what came back. So a citation proves the text was in the model's context, not that anyone tested anything.
