Copilot skills in Excel let you package a prompt you run over and over into one reusable skill that does the work for you — on any workbook, every time.
In this video I break down skills in Copilot for Excel end to end: what a skill actually is, the built-in skills Microsoft ships today, and exactly how to build, upload, and run your own custom skill. I run a built-in portfolio-monitoring skill against real ERP data to spin up a KPI dashboard in a couple of minutes, then build a custom workbook-health-check skill from scratch in Copilot Chat and run it live. I've also packaged the skill-building template and three ready-to-run sample skills for you in the written breakdown below.
In this video you'll learn:
✅ What an Excel Copilot skill is — reusable automation instead of the same prompt every time
✅ How to find, @mention, and toggle built-in skills on or off (and why auto-run matters)
✅ The two skill categories Microsoft ships today: Finance and Visualization
✅ How to build your own skill in Copilot Chat from a reusable template
✅ How to upload a custom SKILL.md to Excel via OneDrive — plus the naming gotchas that cause errors
Chapters
00:00 Why skills are the hot buzzword
00:52 What a skill is + how to find them
02:14 Toggle skills on, off, and auto-run
03:15 The skills Microsoft ships today
03:33 Built-in skill live: ERP to KPI dashboard
05:15 Build your own in Copilot Chat
06:59 Upload a custom skill to Excel
08:01 Naming gotchas that cause errors
