Researchers have built an AI tool that reads a standard ECG and flags hidden heart disease in under two seconds, performance the team described as "superhuman".
The work was led by Dr Ahmed El-Medany, a British Heart Foundation clinical research fellow at Imperial College London, and presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress in Munich.
What it detects: heart failure and heart valve disease, conditions that can be easy to miss on a standard ECG. In a trial of 67,000 patients in the US, the tool identified up to 81 percent of heart failure cases and up to 90 percent of heart valve disease.
Why it matters: ECGs are one of the most common tests in medicine, with roughly a billion performed worldwide every year. A tool that can rapidly flag high-risk patients from a test people already have could catch serious disease far earlier.
IMPORTANT: this is research presented at a conference. It is not yet approved or deployed in clinics, and the percentages are detection rates in a trial, not a guarantee. It is designed to prioritise patients for follow-up, not to replace a cardiologist.
