AI is determining your paycheck now.

Gig companies are using AI to track how long you’ve worked, how badly you need the money, and how likely you are to accept less, then pricing your pay around it. Same job. Same hours. Lower offer, if the algorithm thinks you won’t say no.

This isn’t a theory. The DOJ sued Lyft for advertising fake earnings numbers to recruit drivers and won a $2.1 million settlement. Meta employees are currently suing the company over AI systems used to score and rank staff for mass layoffs. Researchers auditing 500 AI vendors found this same wage-setting technology is now being sold into health care, retail, logistics, and customer service, industries far beyond gig work.

And the guardrails that would slow this down are being removed at the same time. In 2025, Department of Labor guidelines requiring AI to be deployed without violating worker rights were repealed. In December, an executive order was signed to block states from passing their own AI worker protections.

If you gig, if you’re hourly, if you’re salaried, this affects you. The question to ask before your next offer: is this number based on my role, or generated for me?
