For our latest episode, Luis Garicano joined Markus’ Academy to discuss his new book with Jin Li and Yanhui Wu, Messy Jobs. Garicano is a Professor at the London School of Economics and a former Member of the European Parliament.
A summary in three bullets:
● Exposure to AI may be highest for workers with the highest wages, but task exposure does not entail job displacement. Tasks are not jobs. What protects a job is its messiness: how far its tasks are bundled together and rest on human relationships.
● Three types of jobs: (1) single verifiable tasks (AI replaces); (2) strong bundles of tasks where splitting destroys value (AI assists); (3) relationship bundles resting on authority and trust.
● The binding constraint is organizational, not technological. Cognition will get cheap fast, but authority, trust, and implementation will not; the gains will accrue to whoever can rewire firms and institutions around AI.
Timestamps:

[12:48] Three tiers of jobs, three kinds of AI impact
[30:06] Hierarchies and which jobs will survive
[46:33] The value of organization
[1:00:57] Three tiers, three economies
