Inductive Moment Matching (IMM) is a faster way to train generative models - and it may be a real step beyond diffusion.

Diffusion models make gorgeous images, but they are slow. Generating one sample can take dozens or even hundreds of denoising steps. People tried to speed this up with distillation and consistency models, but those often need a pre-trained teacher and can collapse during training.

IMM, from Luma AI, trains in a single stage, from scratch, and samples in just one or a few steps.

The key idea is small but powerful. Alongside the current time step, the network also sees the TARGET time step it should jump to. So instead of crawling step by step, the model learns to leap straight from a noisy point to a cleaner one - matching the true data distribution using Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD), a stable moment-matching loss.

Why it matters:
- One network, one training stage - no teacher, no fragile distillation.
- Samples in 1 to 8 steps, up to about 10x faster generation.
- On ImageNet 256x256 it hits 1.99 FID, beating diffusion (2.27) and flow matching (2.15) with about 30x fewer steps.
- Consistency models turn out to be a single-particle, first-moment special case of IMM, which explains their instability.

Reach for IMM when you need fast, stable, from-scratch generation of images or video. Think twice for discrete data like text, where autoregressive models still rule.
